Sunday, October 25

As stewards of God’s words and works, it is with delight that we have the opportunity to gather as His people in worship by way of a reminder of the truth, power, and goodness of the sacred Scriptures. May we gather in His name and for His glory as we endeavor to make much of Christ through scripture, prayer, song, and the preaching of His Word. We look forward to gathering together this Lord’s day, a special Reformation Sunday celebration, where we will commemorate 500 years of the Bible in English – For Christ, to God’s Glory, and Man’s Joy!

Why do we at TBC commemorate a special themed service this time of year?

We celebrate the Reformation to make much of Christ, not the Reformation. We do not venerate men. We acknowledge God's gifting and mighty work through instruments of His choosing, for His glory. We worship God alone and praise Him for His grace towards us through this pivotal history that unleashed the gospel afresh on a dark and forgetful world.

Our purpose is to steward the history of the Reformation to glorify God and increase our joy in Him.

This Sunday’s Sermon

Salvation Belongs to the Lord | Acts 16:6-15 | Manny Pereira

Sacred Scripture is a gift of grace. This message celebrates that gift in concert with commemorating the five hundredth anniversary of the New Testament in English. The third chapter of Second Timothy plainly states that the sacred writings come from God, lead sinners to salvation in Christ, expose falsehood, and equip God’s people for faithful living. William Tyndale labored so that the “sacred writings” might be placed before English readers to this end—plainly translated, openly read, and allowed to exercise their God-breathed authority. This message seeks to open the essences of this passage, illustrating it with the life and labor of William Tyndale, for the promotion of Christ, to God’s glory and man’s joy.

What We Believe

Excerpt from the  Belgic Confession (Articles20-21, 23):

What do we believe about God?

We believe that God,

who is perfectly merciful and just,

sent his Son to bear the punishment of our disobedience by His most bitter death.

What do we believe about Jesus Christ?

We believe that Jesus Christ

presented Himself in our name before His Father, to appease His wrath with full satisfaction

by offering Himself on the cross

and pouring out His precious blood

for the cleansing of our sins.

What do we believe about the work of Jesus Christ?

We find all rest and comforts in His wounds

and have no need to seek or invent any other means to reconcile ourselves with God

than this one and only sacrifice, once made, which renders believers perfect forever.

We are justified “freely” or “by grace” through redemption in Jesus Christ.
And therefore:

We cling to this foundation, which is firm forever,

giving all glory to God, humbling ourselves, and recognizing ourselves as we are;

not claiming a thing for ourselves or our merits and leaning and resting on the sole obedience of Christ crucified,

which is ours when we believe in him.

– Based on Belgic Confession, articles 20-21, 23 (1561)

Today’s Song Lyrics

Reformation Song

Verse 1

Your word alone is solid ground,

The mighty rock on which we build.

In every line the truth is found

And every page with glory filled.

Verse 2

Through faith alone we come to You,

We have no merit we can claim

Sure that Your promises are true,

We place our hope in Jesus’ name.

(Chorus)

Gloria, Gloria,

Glory to God alone.

Gloria, Gloria,

Glory to God alone.

Verse 3

In Christ alone, we’re justified.

His righteousness is all our plea.

Your law’s demands are satisfied;

His perfect work has set us free.

(Repeat Chorus)

Verse 4

By grace alone we have been saved,

All that we are has come from You.

Hearts that were once by sin enslaved

Now by Your power have been made new.

(Repeat Chorus)

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

Verse 1

A mighty fortress is our God,

A bulwark never failing;

Our helper He, amid the flood

Of mortal ills prevailing.

For still our ancient foe

Doth seek to work us woe;

His craft and power great,

And armed with cruel hate

On earth is not his equal.

Verse 2

Did we in our own strength confide,

Our striving would be losing;

Were not the right Man on our side,

The Man of God’s own choosing.

Dost ask who that may be?

Christ Jesus, it is He!

The Lord of Hosts His name,

From age to age the same,

And He must win the battle.

Verse 3

And though this world, with devils filled,

Should threaten to undo us,

We will not fear for God hath willed

His truth to triumph through us.

The prince of darkness grim,

We tremble not for him;

His rage we can endure,

For lo, his doom is sure,

One little word shall fell him.

(Chorus)

A mighty fortress, a Rock unfailing,

the King of Glory, Forever Amen!

For endless ages, enthroned in praises,

the King of Glory, Forever Amen!

Verse 4

That word above all earthly powers,

No thanks to them, abideth;

The Spirit and the gifts are ours

Through Him who with us sideth.

Let goods and kindred go,

This mortal life also;

The body they may kill:

God’s truth abideth still:

His kingdom is forever!

(Repeat Chorus)

Your Word Endures

Verse 1

Your Word, O God, endures, unbound and never-changing

Your promises are sure, Your purposes unfailing

You speak and earth and heaven shake,

Oceans roar, stars awake

Verse 2

Your Word, O God, endures, it binds the broken-hearted

With riches for the poor and light for those in darkness

You speak and free the captive slave,

Dead are raised from the grave

(Chorus 1)

Your word is forever, holds all things together

Your heart revealed with mercy unreserved

Your Word, O God, endures

Verse 3

Your Word, O God, endures, revealing Your salvation

It sanctifies Your church through every generation

You speak and we behold Your Son,

Word made flesh, God with us

(Chorus 2)

Your word is forever, holds all things together

Your heart revealed with mercy unreserved

Your word is forever, our joy and our treasure

Your matchless works and wisdom seen and heard

Your Word, O God, endures

All My Boast Is In Jesus

Verse 1

What wonder of wonders, what love is this;

That Christ would die for me!

His goodness, His merit, His righteousness,

This sinner’s only plea.

O foolish pride, be crucified;

The work is finished!

(Chorus)

All my boast is in Jesus;

All my hope is His love

And I will glory forever

In what the Cross has done.

Verse 2

Now fully forgiven, my life is filled

With graces undeserved.

For mercy that flowed down that sacred hill,

Let praises now return.

Rise up, my soul, and bless the Lord!

Who else is worthy?

(Repeat Chorus)

(Bridge 1)

O, praise the One, forever blessed!

Him alone my heart adores.

And I will boast in nothing less

Than the love of Christ, my Lord.

(Bridge 2)

O, praise the One, forever blessed!

Him alone my heart adores.

Oh, I will boast in nothing less

Than the love of Christ, my Lord.

Verse 3

I boast not in riches, in strength, or might,

But in the grace of God.

I glory in weakness, to live is Christ

In plenty or in want.

That I may know, that all may see

His pow’r within me!

(Chorus)

All my boast is in Jesus;

All my hope is His love

And I will glory forever

In what the Cross has done.

(Chorus 2)

Now I stand in this freedom;

Ransomed, clean in His sight,

Oh, and I cannot be ashamed for

My boast is Jesus Christ

My boast is Jesus Christ

Forever, my boast is Jesus Christ

O Church, Arise

Verse 1

O church, arise and put your armor on;

Hear the call of Christ our captain;

For now the weak can say that they are strong

In the strength that God has given.

With shield of faith and belt of truth

We’ll stand against the devil’s lies;

An army bold whose battle cry is “Love!”

Reaching out to those in darkness.

Verse 2

Our call to war, to love the captive soul,

But to rage against the captor;

And with the sword that makes the wounded whole

We will fight with faith and valor.

When faced with trials on every side,

We know the outcome is secure,

And Christ will have the prize for which He died–

An inheritance of nations.

Verse 3

Come, see the cross where love and mercy meet,

As the Son of God is stricken;

Then see His foes lie crushed beneath His feet,

For the Conqueror has risen!

And as the stone is rolled away,

And Christ emerges from the grave,

This victory march continues till the day

Every eye and heart shall see Him.

Verse 4

So Spirit, come, put strength in every stride,

Give grace for every hurdle,

That we may run with faith to win the prize

Of a servant good and faithful.

As saints of old still line the way,

Retelling triumphs of His grace,

We hear their calls and hunger for the day

When, with Christ, we stand in glory.

O Word of God Incarnate (Sing Out His Wondrous Word)

Verse 1

O Word of God incarnate,

O Wisdom from on high,

O Truth unchanged, unchanging,

O Light of our dark sky,

We praise You for the radiance

That from the hallowed page,

A lantern for our footsteps,

Shines on from age to age.

Verse 2

The Church from her dear Master

Received the gift divine,

And still that light is lifted

O’er all the earth to shine:

It is the golden casing

Where gems of truth are stored;

It is the heav’n-drawn painting

Of Christ, the living Word.

(Chorus)

Sing out His wondrous word,

All people of the Lord.

What hope is found, what life abounds

Where Jesus’ voice is heard.

Verse 3

It rises like a banner

Before God’s host unfurled;

It blazes like a beacon

Above a darkened world.

It is the chart and compass

That on life’s surging waves,

Through mists and rocky waters,

In Christ our souls are safe.

Verse 4

Now make your Church, O Savior,

A lamp of burnished gold,

To bear before the nations

Your true light as of old.

Oh, keep your wand’ring pilgrims

Upon its path alone;

Till, clouds and darkness ended,

We reach our promised home.

(Repeat Chorus)
