The Failure of Religion

Christianity is not simply one among many “religions.” All of the outward expressions of Christianity are designed to make invisible realities visible—realities that have already been given and promised to the Christian by God in His loving grace through Christ’s work on the cross. Even in its best and most God-honoring conception, religion exists for Christ, not Christ for religion. The fundamental failure of man-made religion is that it suffers from a low view of God. In this passage, Paul outlines three key failures of religion: (1) Rituals in the themselves are worthless; (2) Religious piety is false humility; and (3) Regulations are powerless to change your heart. We are called to apprehend the failure of religion so that we may guard the treasure of Christ.
